Queen of Wands Tarot Significations

The Queen of Wands Minor Arcana card represents an invitation to step into our brightest, most courageous selves. They are a warm solar influence of pure vitality, brave and exuberant.

This Queen reminds me of the Sun, glowing regardless of who sees them.

Often described an effervescent social butterfly, I see this Queen as brimming with life. Eager and excitable, overflowing with zest and spark.

Like all Queens, there is an element of nurturance and tending, however this Queen fans the flames of our desires, asking us to grab life by the reigns and follow what ignites our embers. Whereas the Queen of Cups or Pentacles can be seen as literal nourishment, sleep, boundaries etc,. and the Queen of Swords could be seen as meditation, journalling, or self-expression; the Queen of Wands can be seen as filling ourselves up with what sparks joy.

Sometimes our health feels depleted not because we haven’t rested enough, but because we have done too little of what energises us.

As the suit of Wands, it can be related to something creative, energetic, passionate, or that piques our curiosity. Either way, it burns with light and excitement. Follow your Spirit.

In the Smith Rider Waite Tarot deck, the overarching colour is yellow. This lends a naturally jubilant, sunny disposition as well as connecting it to the Solar Plexus Chakra, seat of our power.

Whereas in the Knight of Wands we may have been burning the candle at both ends or overheating, the Queen has mastered their torch.

It’s interesting to me that this monarch doesn’t have the salamanders of fire on their card, whereas all the others do. Here, they have the regal lion.

In the Thoth deck, they are holding a pinecone staff, symbol of the pineal gland, seat of our intuition. Their animal familiar in this deck is the wild cheetah, untamed and free.

Queen of Wands Upright Key Meanings

Vibrancy, self-assurance, courage, confidence, zest for life, spark, initiation, witchcraft, exuberance

Generally, an upright Queen of Wands is authentic, self-starting, and unafraid to take up space. They are unapologetic in their capacity to shine and when we receive this card, it is an invitation for us, too, to shine bright. The Queen of Wands encourages you to let yourself be seen, lead from the heart, and own your light.

Astrology of the Queen of Wands

Astrologically, the Queens are said to correspond with the Cardinal Signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) in some traditions. This makes them the leaders, the initiators, the matriarchs.

As the Wands suit corresponds with the Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), this adds a boldness to capacity to lead of the Queen of Wands. This is pioneering, scintillating rulership.

This makes the Queen of Wands Cardinal Fire, Aries. Aries is the first Sign of the Zodiac, occurring at the Vernal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. As such, they are first out of the gate, impatient and impulsive. Like the figurative baby, Aries doesn’t question their right to exist, they simply are. Its motto is “I AM”.

The Queens are also said to correspond to the element of Water, thus this Queen is Water of Fire, diametric opposites, boiling point. While water can put fire out, it can also create steam, the highest capacity to rise.

Numerology of the Queen of Wands

Numerologically, the Queen can correspond to the number 13, which would connect it with the Major Arcana Death Card (and Emperor in turn), however the courts are not usually associated with numbers.

As a thought experiment, however, I like to think of the Queen of Wands as associated with Death and The Emperor as it requires a shedding of layers to be seen in all our unique authenticity; and it also asks us to boldly step forward in order to take up space.

How to Read Court Cards

Generally, the courts are said to either represent a person, situation, or facet of self. This can be someone who is influencing the question at hand, the general energy of the current circumstances, or an inner archetype you are invited to call upon (or be mindful of).

As a person, the Queen of Wands could be someone creative, exuberant, proud, dynamic, jovial, strong, confident, vibrant, and effervescent.

As a situation, the Queen of Wands can represent an electric energy that makes us feel at once giddy and powerful, the childlike glee of youth and sapling passions. This is those moments when we get lost in the flow and lose all sense of time, when we step into our most authentic selves, when someone stands up for themselves, when a new love is kindling.

As a facet of self, I see this as a strong invitation to step into radical self-acceptance and unapologetic joy. It is the part of us that is unafraid to share freely of their joy, their craft, their magic. Lead from the heart, lead without hesitation, step into your brightness.
