What Your Palm Lines Say About You

Palmistry is an ancient form of divination, also known as chiromancy, palm reading was widely present amongst Mesopotamian cultures, in Ancient Egypt, old Persia, in Tibet, in Greece and elsewhere. It was spread around Europe by Ancient Greeks and Romans. It is said that the hands can reveal much about a person’s character.

Like many forms of the occult, it has gained a reputation for being fatalistic or scary, and many people are afraid to have their palms read out of fear for what they might discover but don’t worry! It’s more a case of looking at what your potential is and underlying characteristic traits are (with your non-dominant hand) versus what your actual lived out experiences are (on your dominant hand).

The lines on our palms are said to change in as quickly as three months! And so, when confronting the hand you use the most (which will experience more of your life) with the hand you use less (which won’t be as affected by your surrounding circumstances), palm readers can gauge an opportunity for growth and untapped potential.

We visited a palm reader in Bali last year for the first time and it was awesome! We were so nervous going in but then came out totally transformed. It inspired me to look into this ancient practice more and learn a bit about it. It’s a detailed and complex topic, but below is an overview so you, too, can read your own palm lines:

How To Read Your Palms

All the lines are read from right to left if you are right-handed, and left to right if you are left-handed. Generally, you will look at your dominant hand first for a read on what you are actually like, and then your non-dominant hand for any clues to your innate character and missed opportunities. Palmists also believe that itchy hands foretell of change about to occur in your life so take note!

You will not necessarily have all the lines listed (and there are a few more as well), while some may appear later in life, but you will most likely have at least the heart line, head line, and life line, which are the most important, and the fate line.

The Heart Line

Also known as the love line or heaven line, this line shows what sort of relationships and amorous connections you will have throughout your life, both with yourself and others. It’s the first line located under the fingers.

  • If you have a long, straight line (ending below the index finger), you’re said to be a rational thinker who always considers other people’s feelings.

  • If it is short and straight (ending between the middle and index fingers), you need your personal freedom and show your love through actions more than words.

  • If you have a long, curved line (reaching the base of the middle finger) you are said to be very passionate and driven.

  • If it is short and curved (ending below the base of the middle finger), you are reserved and prefer small groups to big ones.

  • If it splits in two, you may have a tendency to put other people’s needs before your own. A fractured line may suggest multiple partners or infidelity.

The Head Line

Also called the wisdom line, this line reveals your intellectual curiosities and pursuits. Located in the centre of the palm, this middle line can also show what you need to learn in this lifetime. A long line shows a breadth in topic interest and the depth represents the complexity of your mind. A straight line shows a more traditional approach while a wavy line suggest you may be a more progressive thinker. If it reaches all the way to the edge of the palm, on the mount of the Moon, you are said to have psychic tendencies.

  • A short line (ending in the middle of the palm) shows that you are a fast thinker and come to conclusions quickly.

  • A long, straight one (extending across the palm to the little finger), suggests that you tend to analyse things and mull over decisions for a long time.

  • A line that splits in two suggests that you can easily see other people’s points of view and that you may change your own opinion frequently.

  • A long, curved line (running down to the bottom corner of the palm) suggests that you’re a creative thinker who can imagine many possible outcomes. If your line forms a fork at the end, this is known as the “writer’s fork” and shows that you may have a natural talent for writing.

The Life Line

This line does NOT indicate the length of your lifespan, rather the amount of vitality you will experience within your life. So instead of showing how many years to your life you will have, it shows how much life you will have lived within those years. It’s also known as the “earth line” and extends around the thumb towards the wrist. The depth of the line indicates the richness of your experiences and the length reveals others’ influence on your life path. A short line is said to show independence, plus:

  • If you have a long line (curving around the ball of the thumb and ending right at the base of the wrist), you are said to be a rock people can count on in times of need.

  • If you have a short line (ending near the centre of the palm), you may need to keep yourself busy and distract yourself when the going gets tough.

  • If you have a faint one it suggests that you need to engage in more stress management techniques, such as yoga and meditation!

  • If you have a broken line this indicates that you may have had a traumatic experience that had an impact on your life choices.

The Fate Line

Also known as the career or destiny line, this one is said to change the most throughout our lifetimes (in as little as 3 months). It starts near the base of the wrist and goes directly up towards the fingers, extending further up the palm as you get older. It dictates the degree to which things will happen to us that are outside of our control.

The Health Line

Not all palms contain this line, but if you do, it runs parallel to the fate line from the wrist but veers more towards the little finger. It indicates the strength of your vigour, vitality, and overall ability to rebound from hardship. This line is most popularly observed in Chinese Palmistry, where a wavy line warns you of potential health problems in the digestive system and a decline of liver or gall bladder function. If you don’t have this line, it is said that you are not likely to experience any significant health issues.

Other Lines

  • Marriage lines - Located under the little finger on the side of the hand parallel above the heart line, sometimes called the affection or relationship line, this line is usually short and faint. If it makes it onto the palm, it suggests that you will have a long marriage, each line representing an individual relationship. If broken it suggests divorce or separation.

  • Children lines - These cross the marriage lines vertically and are symbolic of the depth of relationship you have/will have with your children.

  • Wrist bracelets - Also known as racettes, each bracelet is said to represent roughly 25 years of life (again, the number of lines does not predict your age of death).

How To Read Your Palm

Not only the lines but also the fleshy shapes of the palm are said to be important. As a general rule of thumb, the more pronounced a part is, the stronger those characteristics will be. The less developed they are, so too will those aspects be.

The Mount of Venus

Located at the base of the thumb, it is associated with love, sensuality, and attraction. It also indicates our level of passion, indulgence, and appreciation of the finer things in life.

The Inner and Outer Plains of Mars

The area of Mars can be broken down into three parts and is the space covering the centre of the hand. They represent aggression, resilience, and temperament. The Inner Mars, also known as Lower Mars, located above the thumb, represents physical strength and boldness. Outer Mars, or Upper Mars, represents perseverance and courage. The Plain of Mars is the flat section in the centre of the palm and is characterised by the lines that cross it.

The Mount of Jupiter

Located at the bast of the index finger, it represents our spirituality, generosity, confidence, ambition, and leadership abilities.

The Mount of Saturn

Located under the middle finger, it signals our wisdom, responsibility, sense of duty, integrity, and work ethic.

The Mount of Apollo

Found under the ring finger, it shows our optimism, vitality, and essence of our nature. It can also point to artistic inclinations, happiness, and overall success.

The Mount of Mercury

Located under the little finger, this shows our communication abilities, wit, adaptability, social skills, and resourcefulness.

The Mount of the Moon

Also known as the mount of Luna, it symbolises intuition, imagination, and psychic abilities. Located towards the bottom of the palm on the little finger side, it represents our emotional strength, empathy, and compassion.

Shape of the hand

The general shape of a palm is also said to have certain characteristics. A square palm with short fingers is said to be an Earth hand. People with this shaped hand are said to be practical and down-to-earth. Fire hands have a long palm with short fingers, individuals with these types of hand are said to be, you guessed, fiery. Air hands are boney with protruding knuckles, square palms and long fingers- these belong to intellectually curious individuals. Water hands have long palms and long fingers, subject to clamminess, owners of these hands are in touch with their emotions.

How To Read Your Fingers

The fingers are comprised of three parts, called the phalanges, where the joints meet. The length of each of these means different things and also have Astrological associations. As this can start to get quite complex and there is already a lot of information to take in on the palms alone, for the purpose of this article I will just list an overview of the fingers- if you would like to learn more, I suggest this Palmistry book that I found really insightful!

Mercury (little) finger

A short mercury finger means you may lack the ability to make quick decisions and may not be so good with money, a long little finger indicates the opposite. When pointed, it shows eloquence, tact and diplomacy, when square you may be good at teaching and business.

Apollo/Sun (ring) finger

It stands for arts and music abilities, your indulgence in leisure and pleasure, and the level of your affection. If your other fingers tend to bend towards your Apollo finger you have a strong sense of self and possess good confidence- you thrive in the public eye!

Saturn (middle) finger

This finger shows your wisdom, judgement, and tendency to take life seriously (or not). If it is long you possess good common sense, if it is short you may be stubborn or lack vitality.

Jupiter (index) finger

A long Jupiter finger is said to indicate a love of life and leadership abilities. If your index finger is much longer than the halfway point of the Saturn finger’s first phalange, then you are said to be domineering.

Thumb

The thumb is ruled by Venus. The top part of the thumb with the nail, the first phalange, is said to be an indicator of our will. If it is well-developed, you are strong-willed, a short top thumb can indicate that you are impulsive. The bottom part is indicative of our desires and things we crave deeply. The longer the thumb overall, the more self-assured the person (beware if it is extremely long)! A short thumb suggests a person that is easily swayed, a thick thumb may belong to someone stubborn, a square tip is pragmatic while a pointy tip is impulsive. Smooth joints indicates that a person is full of vitality and knobbly joints suggest a more erratic energy.
