Ubud Rice Field Walk
There’s nothing more quintessentially Balinese than rice fields, and what way better to experience them than with a beautiful rice fields walk.
Ubud is full of magic at every corner so it’s no surprise that it has a couple of secrets up its sleeves and we discovered one of them on our last visit. You may have heard of Campuhan Ridge Walk, which is a beautiful trail where the two rivers meet in Ubud. This is also a very sacred place in Bali as it offers a potent source of holy water for many kinds of ceremonial purposes as well as being used as a place for Melukat (a purification ritual to clean your body and soul).
Campuhan Ridge Walk is especially beautiful at golden hour so it’s a perfect free activity to do before heading out to eat at one of Ubud’s many delicious eateries. It’s a 2 km walk along the Campuhan Ridge and is very popular with local people and tourists alike. You’ll see a mix of dog walkers, runners, photographers, couples and friends out for an evening stroll. This is definitely a walk we also recommend taking whilst you’re in Ubud but due to it’s popularity, it is no secret anymore so can get quite busy!
The secret walk is a beautiful rice fields just seven minutes away from this well known one. Tucked away behind the Starbucks on the main road of Ubud (Jalan Raya Ubud) is a beautiful, quiet, serene path that will take you along rice fields and farms for a relaxing stroll. As this is one of the lesser-known things to do in Ubud you will most likely have it all to yourself except for the people who live and farm the land! The secret walk is another one worth taking at golden hour so you can watch the sun go down and witness the beautiful warm setting glow and the changing colours stream through the palm trees across the rice fields.
If you fancy filling your whole day looking at all the Ubud rice fields then you can drive 30 minutes out of town passing little villages and temples along the way and spend the morning at the famous Tegallalang rice terraces, which is one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever seen! For the most magical views head straight to the back of the rice terraces for sun rise. You will not be disappointed.
We recommend taking the secret walk after spending the afternoon bartering for beautiful local goods in the hustle and bustle of Ubud market as it’s a perfect place to unwind, breath in the fresh air and soak in the last rays of the day. It’s also less than a 10 minute walk from the market, which makes it even better! The route will take roughly an hour but if you’re like us and like to stop to take it all in and snap away on the camera then expect it to take you a bit longer. Another plus point about the secret walk is that it loops back round in a circle so that you end up back in the centre of Ubud, just in time for dinner :)
Or better yet, why not stop along the way and enjoy a delicious meal during sunset at one of the restaurants surrounded by golden rice fields along the walk. There are a couple of options on the pathway including:
Sweet Orange Warung - Homecooked Balinese food
Yuga Organic Warung - Tasty vegetarian dishes
Cafe Pomegranate - A beautiful restaurant with 360 views of the surrounding area
Sari Organik - This cafe in is set on an organic farm and has a strong focus on keeping things sustainable
We promise you won’t be disappointed as this is probably the nicest location to eat in the whole of Ubud! If you fancy walking along this little slice of Ubud secret magic then you can see the full route in detail here.
There are some other really amazing walks to go on in Ubud including the Penestanan rice field walk, Kajeng rice fields walk and Juwuk Manis rice field walk, which are all a stones throw away from Ubud palace which is right in the centre of town. We ran out of time to see all of these as there’s just too much amazingness to see in Ubud but when we go back we’ll be sure to visit all of them!
So that’s our guide on the Ubud secret rice field walk. We hope it’s been of some use and you enjoy this lesser-known place on your next visit to Bali! We really loved Ubud as it was a beautiful place to unwind in such a beautiful, natural and spiritual setting.
