How To Find Your Moon Sign

Your Moon Sign in Astrology represents a fundamental part of your cosmic blueprint, a part of your so-called “Big 3” (along with your Sun and Rising Sign). Where it was in the sky on the day and location you were born, as well as exact birth time, is significant in determining your inner world, emotional needs, body, nurturance, and maternal figure.

Because it moves through the Signs roughly every 2.5 days, it is quite personal to you. While the Sun can show you your solar, external expression, where you shine; la Luna is more internal, representing our feelings, intuition, creativity, and how/where we get sustenance from- both literally and figuratively.

Read on to learn more about the importance of your Moon Sign and how to find it!

The Meaning Of Your Moon Sign

As mentioned above, this is our yin, instinctual, unconscious side. The Moon represents things we do naturally and how we perceive things to be. For example, whereas an Aries Sun may naturally aspire to be bold and fearless, striving to be driven and headstrong; a Moon in Aries may feel the need to be known as a leader, they need to express their energy and independence, and feel that they are seen as such in return; and their drive can lead to subconscious impulsiveness (whereas a Sun in Aries may be more consciously aware of these tendencies).

The Moon is the ruler of Cancer, and so you can also look to the House that Cancer is in in your Natal Chart and then see where the Moon is for more detail about that House. As with all placements, the aspects it makes to other Planets and points is highly influential to its significations. You can use a free Moon calculator from Cafe Astrology here.

For a very basic, archetypal overview, here is the la Luna in the Zodiac Signs:

Aries Moon - Cardinal Fire

In Aries it needs to feel independent agency, they are the leaders and pioneers that desire to be recognised for their warrior spirit. They are youthful and energetic, this can lead to fiery impulsiveness- an Aries Moon wants what it wants now! La Luna in Aries is bold and feels all the feels, but they can pass just as quick. It runs hot with a zest for life.

Taurus Moon - Fixed Earth

It is exalted in Taurus, so it is naturally comfortable here. The Moon is our felt sensations, in Taurus this is naturally heightened being the most tactile and of the earth Sign. A Taurus Moon needs to feel comfortable, safe, and secure, it requires its needs to be met and financial stability provides the structure for this. It is an extremely nurturing Moon- food, fabrics, sleep- all the best things in life, Taurus knows their value and how to enjoy them!

Gemini Moon - Mutable Air

Here it is quick, intellectual, expressive, curious, and communicative. It needs flexibility, adaptability, and novelty. It likes to keep things on its toes and moving, it is light-hearted, interested and interesting. A Moon in Gemini needs strong self-expression and stimulation, finding a mirror and someone to bounce things off can be key. It is the eternal student and finds emotional satisfaction in learning and sharing knowledge.

Cancer Moon - Cardinal Water

In its domicile, the Moon does what it does best here- it feels. This is emotional and nourishing, the most of all the Moon Signs. It is the matriarch. Capable of leading from the heart, a Cancer Moon knows no bounds. It can be a tender, protective point, this Luna is so sensitive and capable of feeling, there is an innate need for stewardship. In Cancer is intuitive, perceptive, creative, and instinctive. It ebbs and flows with the ideas, empathy is its strong suit.

Leo Moon - Fixed Fire

This is a playful placement, one of generosity, joy, performance, creative expression, and lightness. A Leo Moon’s task is to uplift and entertain, it enjoys bringing joy to the world, and creating in every sense of the word. The Leo Luna is here to shine and generously put on a display of affection. It brings a youthful silliness that desires to amplify pleasure in life.

Virgo Moon - Mutable Earth

This is a healing, devoted, analytical placement of service. It is a perfectionist that desires to better itself, others, and systems. It likes to feel needed and has a keen eye for improvement. It can be a shy, reserved, or demure, sometimes not comfortable taking credit for its work, a Virgo Luna is meticulous, detail-oriented, and flexible, bringing about change in a grounded way.

Libra Moon - Cardinal Air

This is the placement of partnership, a Libra Luna is collaborative, mediating, cooperative, compromising, and balanced. It seeks to find the middle ground and needs peace and harmony to feel safe. It enjoys being in company and seeks to do things together, desiring fairness and justness. In Libra it is centred around relationships and aesthetics, it needs things to look and feel right.

Scorpio Moon - Fixed Water

Here it is in fall in Scorpio, being the Sign opposite where it exalts in Taurus. A Scorpio Luna runs deep, it is intense and penetrating, there is nothing superficial about this placement and it is not afraid to go into the depths. In Scorpio it feels a need to confront its shadow and that of the world, desiring to break taboos and decode the mysteries of the psyche.

Sagittarius Moon - Mutable Fire

Capricorn Moon - Cardinal Earth

Here is in detriment in Capricorn as it is opposite its domicile in Cancer. A Capricorn Luna is dutiful, responsible, steadfast, and full of maturity and integrity. It can feel the burdens and weight of the world, eager to build lasting, durable structures, fearing to be out of control. It is not comfortable being vulnerable or in the realm of emotions, a desire to be perfect and achieve can lead to issues of guilt, shame, or undue pressure.

Aquarius Moon - Fixed Air

An Aquarius Luna may have always felt different, like it never belonged, not quite of this world or fitting in. It has alternative needs and is more comfortable intellectualising and rationalising its emotions rather than feeling them. In Aquarius it cares deeply about the collective and humanity, it is eager to envision a better world, and desires its independence, freedom, and unique authenticity within it.

Pisces Moon - Mutable Water

A Pisces Luna is the most empathetic, intuitive, absorptive of them all. It can easily pick up on the energies of those around it and strong energetic boundaries are essential. In Pisces it can sometimes struggle to be in this world but not of it, it feels so much- learning how to not take on the suffering of others nor be martyr or victim of circumstance is necessary with this placement. Because of this, escapism or disassociation is possible. Connection, meaning, purpose, oneness, and creative expression are key.

The House that it is in can show you which area of life you may feel emotionally tied to, the areas in which you can feel emotionally fulfilled and expressed when they are in balance, and another layer of what you may need to feel emotionally secure. For example, while a Taurus Moon can be grounded and comfort-seeking, in the 2nd House this can point to an emphasis on financial stability to feel secure. As with every interpretation, the whole Birth Chart must be taken into consideration for a complete understanding.

Here is a simplified interpretation of the it in the Houses:

Moon in the 1st House:

This puts your emotions to the forefront for the world to see. It may be difficult for you to hide your emotions (your face and body language will give you away if you try), and you may experience the world very viscerally. Your emotions can strongly be felt in the body and emotional flare ups may coincide with health issues and vice versa. You wear your heart on your sleeve and good emotionally expression is essential for you!

Moon in the 2nd House:

A placement in the second House craves financial stability and to feel that its skills, resources, and talents are fulfilling. It strongly ties in issues of self-worth and confidence into emotional fulfilment.

Moon in the 3rd House:

This brings a love for learning and a need for emotional expression. A 3rd House Luna is the eternal student and may be tied to its siblings, relatives, local neighbourhood, childhood, or intellectual capacity more than others. Reading, writing, speaking, social media are key features, as well as (witch)crafting or working with the hands. This is also where it finds its joy.

Moon in the 4th House:

A 4th House Luna brings a strong emotional tie to the home, family, concept of belonging, ancestry, roots, lineage, and inner world. Focussing on these aspects will bring emotional satisfaction.

Moon in the 5th House:

This is a placement of creation, pleasure, joy, sex, and romance. It can put a focus on children, childlike play, or the inner child. A Luna in the 5th House needs to create, whether artistically or not, this can also be in the form of sports.

Moon in the 6th House:

This is a Luna with a focus on work, health, and acts of service. It can make it hard-working with a desire to be of service, as well as a need for physical wellness. It places importance on rituals and the day-to-day structure of the life.

Moon in the 7th House:

This places the focus of the heart and inner world on the other, into relationships. It strongly ties in partnership for emotional satisfaction and relationships may be a key feature in feel safe and needed in the world.

Moon in the 8th House:

This is a deep House of transformation and enmeshed boundaries. It strongly ties in security to the resources of others, including inherited beliefs and emotional baggage. Moons in the 8th House may feel safe with blended resources as well as in the realms of the occult or mystic.

Moon in the 10th House:

This is an ambitious placement, it puts it on the public stage for all to see and brings it to the external world. It strongly ties in the career to emotional satisfaction and it needs a purpose and vocation in life. This is a Luna concerned with legacy, and may be exposed for all to see.

Moon in the 11th House:

This is a collaborative Luna that needs to be a part of a community, with a strong friendship group around it and to get involved in the collective. It desires to be a part of something and around like-minded people.

Moon in the 12th House:

This is an introspective Luna comfortable in retreat and solitude with its inner world. It is a quiet placement that needs time alone to recalibrate and emotionally integrate. It may enjoy going into the depths of its psyche, subconscious, dreams, past lives, spirituality, or mental health.

Both the Sign and House will need to be taken into consideration together (along with any aspects). For example, while an Aquarius Moon is an intellectual visionary, in the 3rd House makes it a keen learner with a need for emotional self-expression (whereas usually an Aquarius can be more detached from its emotions); and so it can communicate its needs in a unique way with its local community, on social media, or through means such as writing and speaking for emotional satisfaction. Journalling, poetry, creative writing, opening up on social media, spoken word, talk therapy- these are all emotional releases for an Aquarius Moon in the 3rd House (if it is squaring Saturn, for example, this can make it a little more self-conscious or restrained in its emotional sharing).

Once you have found the House and Sign your Moon is in, you can also look to the ruling Planet of that House/Sign for more layers of information (for example, a Moon in Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter- look to which House, Sign, and aspects Jupiter is making).
