Releasing with the Full Moon in Libra

Full Moons in general are ideal times to shed and release what is no longer serving as they are an opposition between the Sun (conscious) and Moon (subconscious), darkness illuminated.

A Full Moon in Libra, specifically, is the perfect time to release people-pleasing and other tendencies to put the needs of others above ourself.

Archetypal Libra is the Sign of relationships, the Other to the Self of Aries. It is a compromising, mediating Sign known as the diplomat of the Zodiac.

Ruled by Venus, it is charming and affable— it knows how to get along and that a spoonful of honey helps the medicine go down!

What is a Full Moon Astrologically?

A Full Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon are opposing one another in the sky from our vantage point on earth in opposing Zodiac Signs by exact degree (e.g. the Sun at 4º Aries— aka four days into Aries Season— and the Moon at 4º Libra. This will be between the end of March and end of April sometime.

As a Full Moon always occurs in the Zodiac Sign opposing the current Season we are in, which can be seen as differing sides of the same coin— these Signs are of the same duality/polarity (either Diurnal or Nocturnal), and of the same mode/quality (Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable, depending on whether they fall at the beginning, middle, or end of a season).

The polarities are:

  • Aries - Libra (In Aries Season— when the Sun is in Aries, meaning it has crossed the Vernal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere— we will have a Full Moon in Libra when the Moon reaches the same degree in Libra that the Sun is at in Aries. During Libra Season 6 months later, we will have a Full Moon in Aries instead. This is a Diurnal Cardinal pairing)

  • Taurus - Scorpio (Fixed Nocturnal)

  • Gemini - Sagittarius (Mutable Diurnal)

  • Cancer - Capricorn (Cardinal Nocturnal)

  • Leo - Aquarius (Fixed Diurnal)

  • Virgo - Pisces (Mutable Nocturnal)

While the Zodiac Seasons occur at roughly the same time each year as the Sun moves about 1º per day (hence why it is easy to do Sun (“star”) Sign Astrology), the exact date of the Full Moon (or corresponding New Moon in the same Zodiac Sign more or less 6 months earlier) will vary.

-> If you’re an Aries, book in a Year Ahead Reading with me for details about what your Solar Return heralds for you!

When a New Moon or Full Moon occur close enough to the Nodes (points in space the the ecliptic—the Sun’s apparent path— intersects the Moon’s orbit), they are perfectly aligned for the illusion of a Solar Eclipse or Lunar Eclipse respectively. These are like supercharged New/Full Moons.

Energetics of a Full Moon

As the Sun and Moon are opposing one another on a Full Moon, it is a time of heightened emotions and things literally coming to light. The Sun is the representation of our vitality and sense of self; the Moon is our body, emotions, and needs.

As the lunar cycle begun roughly 2 weeks before on the New Moon (when the Sun and Moon were aligned), a Full Moon can also be seen as the peak of the cycle— the harvest phase. We planted our seeds in our Aries New Moon ritual as the Moon grew (“waxed”), now it has reached maximum potency on the Full Moon, after which it will begin to decrease in light and wrap up its cycle (“wane”).

Thus, Full Moons are typically seen as times for both shedding and releasing that which no longer serves, as well as expressing gratitude for any abundance we have reaped thus far.

Full Moon in Libra

A Full Moon in Libra specifically is a good time for releasing any relational blockages we may have, especially romantic. It can be a powerful time to let go of fear of conflict and standing up for ourselves too. It can also be the perfect time to release any outdated personal styles!

Archetypal Libra is considerate, compromising, and charming with an affable manner. They like to like and be liked in return! As a Venusian, it understands the importance of aesthetics and relationships. It is also a Sign considered with fairness and justice— things must feel balanced, in harmony, and reciprocal!

This Full Moon is ruled by Venus, the Goddess of Love. As the Planet of resources and connection, Venus governs our tastes and distastes, what we value. You can look to where Venus currently is in the sky for more details about the specific Full Moon in Libra you are experiencing.

Full Moon in Libra Ritual

Most Full Moon rituals tend to focus on letting go of anything outdated or unaligned, as well as seeing what has grown since the corresponding New Moon either two weeks earlier, or in the same Zodiac Sign roughly 6 months earlier (in this case during Libra Season).

Here is the basis for all my Full Moon rituals:

  1. Cleanse your space - This can be done by ringing a bell or spraying an aura mist; opening windows and smoke cleansing; throwing salt in the corners and sweeping it out anti-clockwise; or mopping with a herbal wash.

  2. Set up an elemental circle - I like to use incense in the East for Air (or feathers/bells etc.); candles in South for Fire; a bowl of water in the West for Water; and crystals (or plants) in the North for Earth.

  3. Centre + ground yourself - I do breathwork followed by a visualisation meditation. Then I visualise excess energy draining from me like a waterfall and my roots growing down into the earth. I fill myself with a bright light and wrap myself in a protective bubble.

  4. Journal on what you wish to release - Write down what you wish to let go of and surrender, you can finish with “so it is” and sign or date it. If you have a wonderful Magic of I Astrological Planner like I do, this is when you could fill in your Moon Journal. I also like to begin by pulling Tarot cards to see what else comes up -> Get a Full Moon Tarot reading with me here!

  5. Burn your paper - Safely (using tweezers) burn your paper in the candle and let the ash drop into your bowl of water. Ask the fire to help purify and regenerate you, symbolically throwing any last debris into the flames. Take a moment to embody how it feels to be without this thing now.

  6. Flush it away - Thank Mother Nature and the Spirit of Water and Fire for their assistance and flush the remains down the drain— again visualising it leaving you and going back to the ocean to be transmuted. Snuff out your candle and let the incense burn down as an offering, thank the rest of the Elements for their guidance.

  7. BONUS: Mirror affirmations - The relationship we have with ourself is always the most important. The power of the spoken word is not to be underestimated. Stand in front of a mirror and list all of the things you love about yourself, finish with positive I AM affirmations.

When crafting your own ritual, apart from the basics listed above— tailored to the corresponding Zodiac Sign and your own preferences— you can also align your rituals with where in your Natal Chart the Full Moon is personally occurring in for you, i.e. the House it is falling in. Read on for how:.

Libra Full Moon in the Astrological Houses

We each have all of the Zodiac Signs in one of our “Houses” in our Natal Chart, these are like areas of life— when Planets are transiting through them their energy is expressed in this area of life for us. Anchoring your Full Moon intentions to the House it is falling in for you can help to personalise your experience of the cosmos.

In this area of life during a Libra Full Moon, we are seeking to advocate for ourselves and release indecisiveness, over-deliberation, or defaulting to others.
