Embrace Personal Growth During Aquarius New Moon

New Moons are a time of planting fresh seeds and initiating new cycles. A New Moon in Aquarius is an especially good time for carving out your own unique path and beginning afresh!

We can use these rhythms of the Earth to keep us on track, both visually in the sky as well as mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Whether you are seeking to start a small new habit over the course of one lunar cycle (28 days) or a longer-term goal over the 6 months until the corresponding Full Moon in Aquarius during Leo Season, beginning your journey now is the perfect time!

What is a New Moon energetically?

New Moons are when the Sun and Moon are visually aligned in the sky from our vantage point on earth in the same Zodiac Sign and “conjunct“ by exact degree (e.g. both at 4º Aquarius). It occurs in the Zodiac Season of that Sign (i.e. in this case, 4 days into Aquarius Season, which is between the end of January and February).

As it comes fairly close to the New Year, it can still be a good time to come back to your original intentions and see if they still feel aligned!

While the Zodiac Seasons occur roughly at the same time each year (hence why it is easy to do “Sun Sign” Astrology) as the Sun moves about 1º per day starting from the Vernal Spring Equinox (aka Aries Season), the exact date of the New Moon (or corresponding Full Moon in the opposing Zodiac Sign Season more or less six months later) will vary.

As the Sun and Moon are aligned on a New Moon, it is the start of the cycle— a yin period of introspection and planting of seeds. When there appears to be no Moon in the sky and the night is dark, it is time to turn within for our light.

-> When they square each other, at a 90º angle, roughly a week later, is the time for taking first major action on the intentions we set now!

This part of the lunar cycle would be the equivalent of Winter seasonally. In lunar farming, according to the wonderful Magic of I., the gravity from the Moon is stronger now and pulls up water which aids in germination. It would thus be a time of planting plants that produce seeds outside of the fruit.

New Moon in Aquarius

A New Moon in Aquarius is a good time to plant seeds relating to your unique authenticity, for embracing all your quirks and what makes you individual, as well as for finding your people. It can be a prime time to find new ways of doing things in your daily life or open yourself up to something new. Be the change you wish to see!

Archetypal Aquarius is the oddball of the Zodiac marching to the beat of their own drum, carving out their own rules and path in life. It can sometimes feel like an outsider or loner, but is also seeking a community of like-minded individuals. Collective independence. It values freedom, solitude, and those that aren’t afraid to let their freak flag fly.

Saturn, the ruler, is the Planet of distance and separation, in this in can feel a little cold, aloof, and detached from emotions. It also understands the importance of hard work, patience, and commitment.

New Moon in Aquarius Rituals

Most New Moon rituals focus on intention-setting for the upcoming cycle (either over the following two weeks until it peaks to fruition in the Full Moon phase; until the next cycle begins again with the following New Moon four weeks later; or until the corresponding Full Moon in the opposing Zodiac Season six months later— in this case, the Full Moon in Aquarius during Leo Season).

Here is the basis for all my New Moon rituals:

  1. Cleanse your space - You can ring bell, spray an aura mist (I make a crystal and Reiki-infused Moon water with essential oils); open the windows and smoke cleanse; throw salt in the corners and sweep it out anti-clockwise; or mop with a herbal wash.

  2. Set up an elemental circle - Many rituals may begin by calling in the elements. I put incense in the East for Air; a candle in the South for Fire; a bowl of water in the West for Water; and crystals in the North for Earth.

  3. Centre + ground yourself - I do some breathwork followed by a visualisation meditation.

  4. Journal on your intentions - Write down what you wish to call in using positive affirmations or mantras, you can finish with “so it is” and sign/date it. Often I pull Tarot cards to see what other messages come up for me.

  5. Plant your seeds - Read your intention out loud three times to call it in, fold the paper three times clockwise and plant it in soil outside or in a plant pot. You can also add seeds, coins, crystals, a key— anything that resonates with your goal.

  6. Water your plant - Thank Mother Nature and the Spirit of Water for their assistance. Take a moment to visualise your seeds taking root and blossoming. Snuff out the candle and let the incense burn down as an offering. Thank the rest of the elements.

When crafting your ritual, apart from the basics listed above, tailored to the corresponding Zodiac Sign and your own preferences— you can also align your rituals with the place in your Natal Chart they are occurring for you, i.e. the House they are falling in. Read on for how:
