Understanding the Archetype of Sagittarius
Archetypal Sagittarius is optimistic, jovial, expansive, and growth-centric. They are on a constant quest for truth, keen to explore life, and often associated with spirituality, adventure, and travel.
Its ruling Planet is Jupiter, this is the cheerleader of the Zodiac, able to dream big and view challenges as growth opportunities. They are spontaneous, impulsive, and excitable. Often generous, they typically have a YOLO attitude to life.
As a Mutable Fire Sign, this is one of the most scintillating Signs of the Zodiac! Where Sagittarius is in your Natal Chart points to the area in which you can be naturally broad-minded and positive.

Characteristics of Sagittarius
Sagittarius is a Diurnal, Mutable Fire Sign. Dirunal Signs (Fire + Air) are more active and outward-facing. Mutable Signs are flexible, changeable, and eager to move on to the next thing— they come at the end of the seasons when the weather is getting ready to change (in this case, Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere). Fire Signs are dynamic, expressive, and energetic— fiery!
The Sagittarian spirit is both teacher and preacher, they can be overly confident and optimistic at times, but usually things do usually tend to work out for the best when you believe they will! Especially if you view failure as optional because everything is turned into a teachable lesson!
Its ruling body part, fittingly, is the hips and legs, necessary for roaming wild distances and running free. Archetypal Sagittarius can sometimes become restless in their never-ending search for what’s just around the riverbend.
Its symbol is the centaur, mythical archer. In this, combined with their Jupiterian rulership, we can more strongly see the association with myth, story, and spirituality. This is the only half human in the Zodiac (with Libra having the only non-human/living symbol).
The Planets and Sagittarius
As Astrology is the study of the Planets, it can be useful to think about a Zodiac Sign through which Planets are comfortable and at home in them, and which ones struggle in their domain.
Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter traditionally— Zeus, God of all Gods! Here we can see its expansiveness, Jupiter is the largest Planet in our solar system— it definitely has a more-is-more attitude. Jupiter/Zeus just straight up likes a good time, lives for the moment.
Jupiter is of the day “Sect”, known as the “greater benefic”, in comparison to Venus, known to bring abundance, fortune, and growth (but not all growth is necessarily good)!
Jupiter finds its so-called “joy” in the 11th House of Friendship, the House of Good Spirt. This is the House of networking, collaboration, alliances, and aspirations.
No Planet exalts in Sagittarius, which I always find interesting. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, however, able to expand its capacity for nurturance and support here.
As nothing exalts in Gemini either, no Planet finds its fall in Sagittarius, another interesting point to note. Nothing (except for Jupiter) does particularly well or badly in Sagittarius.
Mercury, however, does find its detriment in Sagittarius as it is is the ruler of Gemini. As the Planet of facts, figures, data, and analytics, it can struggle in the Sign of act first think later, trusting that everything will work out for the best, and perhaps even eschewing the “truth” in conquest of Truth. Jupiter is the Planet of faith and belief (hence why it also rules Pisces), Mercury here can struggle with the capacity to let its arrow land and hit the target by aiming too high.
Mercury in Sagittarius is very good at philosophical musings, but less good at the nitty gritty details. If you’ve ever found yourself in an argument with a Natal Mercury in Sagittarius, don’t bother— you’ll find yourself looping around for hours without making a proper point! Lead with intellectual curiosity.

The Planets in Sagittarius
The Zodiac Seasons are governed by where the Sun currently is in the Zodiac belt (which is a division of the ecliptic— the apparent path of the Sun— into twelve equal Signs). When it is in the Sign of Sagittarius, we are collectively in Sagittarius Season.
This usually occurs roughly between the 22nd November - 21st December but depends on the day of the Vernal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere each year (which starts the Astrological cycle and is what the Tropical Zodiac Signs are based on— not the constellations as is commonly thought!), the Sun spending roughly 30 days in each Sign thereafter, moving 1º a day.
In the Northern Hemisphere (which “Western” Astrology is developed on), Sagittarius Season is the end of Autumn (although it might not feel that way!), fittingly the most festive time year! This is just before Christmas and when we are out at office Christmas parties, buying gifts with Jupiterian generosity, and literally “eating, drinking, and being merry”— the most obviously Sagittarius time it could possible be in the whole year haha!
Sagittarius Season
During Sagittarius Season is simply the perfect time to live it up! Enjoy life, indulge, live for the moment— it’s literally what Sagittarius and Jupiter ask of us! After the darkness and shadow delving we’ve been doing in Scorpio Season just before, now is the time to take a break from alchemisation and transformation, and simply enjoy being. We’ve earned it!
It’s a wonderful time to really appreciate and live life to its fullest, when it’s dark and cold outside we’ve got to make our own light! Luxuriate in all the food and drink, enjoy good company, give generously. It can also be a good time to reconnect to your why, your sense of faith and wonder in the world (and perhaps, why not, your sense of wander too).
