How to Use Firdaria as a Timing Technique
Derived from ancient Islamicate Astrology, Firdaria is a method that unveils the cosmic rhythm of our lives by dividing it into periods governed by specific planetary influences and sub Planetary periods, like chapters and paragraphs of a book. We can discern the feel of a time period based on which Planet rules it and its nature in our Natal Charts.
Read on for how to use Firdaria as a timing technique in your own life:
Firdaria and the Chapters of your Life
Firdaria is a way of allocating different themes and feels to the periods of our lives. They are broken down and governed by the classical seven Planets and the Lunar Nodes. Depending on whether you were born in the day or night, the first Firdaria “chapter” (of Firdar period) of your life will be governed by either the Sun for Day Charts or the Moon for Night Charts, lasting until we are 10 and 9 years old respectively. We then cycle through a different Planetary phase every few years in a sequence as follows:
Firdaria Periods for Day Births
Sun: 10 years
Venus: 8 years
Mercury: 13 years (so we enter into a Mercury period on our 19th birthday)
Moon: 9 years
Saturn: 11 years
Jupiter: 12 years
Mars: 7 years
North Node: 3 years
South Node: 2 years
Firdaria Periods for Night Births
Moon: 9 years
Saturn: 11 years
Jupiter: 12 years (so we enter into a Jupiter period on our 21st birthday)
Mars: 7 years
Sun: 10 years
Venus: 8 years
Mercury: 13 years
North Node: 3 years
South Node: 2 years
These years then become subdivided into months, 1/7 the length of the main period. The first sub-period is ruled by the same planet which rules the period and then the rulers of sub-periods follow in the same order as the rulers of periods. So for example, on our 32nd birthday, if born during the day, we will enter into a Moon period and sub-period, then at 33.8 years old we will enter a Jupiter sub-period.
There is a free calculator on astro-seek.com that can do it all for you! This is especially useful for the sub-periods as they can become complicated to do by hand.
How to Interpret Your Firdaria Period
So, based on how old you currently are and whether you were born during the day or night will dictate what Planetary period you are currently in. These set the stage and tone for the general feel of the time.
When we are in a Sun period can be a time of self-expression, visibility, coming into ourselves more, of vitality, ego, identity and our sense of self.
A Moon period can feel mutable, lunar, yin, an introspective time of ebbing and flowing. We may travel frequently or be in flux. Things relating to the body, emotions, needs, family, nurturance, and nourishment may be relevant.
In a Mercury period we may be expressive, surrounded by people and friends, networking, learning, reading, writing, studying, speaking, involved in trade and commerce, and generally have diverse experiences that can include travel as well.
During Venus periods we may deal more with money, love, connections, values, women, sensuality and sexuality, pleasure, luxury, and art.
In Mars periods we may be more active, driven, determined, ambitious, inflammatory, conflicted, angry, impatient, energetic, brave, hot-tempered, and bold.
In Jupiter periods we may be dealing with our morals and ethics, learning and teaching, our personal philosophy and growth, expansion, indulgences, abundance, spirituality, religion, and excess.
Saturn periods may be characterised by a sense of austerity, rigidity, or severity, of discipline and dedication, of building things of lasting value, of structure, stability, and challenges.
North Node periods can be ones of growth and increase, but also a yearning, searching, and hunger.
South Node periods can be seen as periods of release and letting go, of purging and lessening. You can read more ways of conceptualising and interpretating the periods in our lives here.
Then these periods can be combined with the sub-periods. For example we may be in an overarching Moon phase of change, travel, and building a home (from when we are roughly 32 years old if born during the day), and within this a Jupiter sub-period. This can be characterised by expansion within our family, growth of our home, and travel that connects us to our spirituality and sense of abundance.
Finally, as with every Astrological interpretation, these MUST be rooted into your Birth Chart because the Natal Planetary condition will dictate the personal experience. Using the example above, if we have the Moon in Aquarius in the 3rd House, we could say this overarching period can be one of finding an authentic self-expression and simultaneous independent and belonging within the local community. If Saturn (the ruler) is in the 2nd House in Capricorn, we could say that finances and personal values may also be relevant during this time as well as building longterm around these themes of home and travel.
If Jupiter is then in Cancer in the 8th House, we can say during this particular timeframe of 12 months that heart-centred family values and growth within the home are particularly amplified, as well as a sense of life, death, and rebirth cycle or re-evaluating of joint finances.
It is important to come back to the Natal Chart because although the next sub-period is ruled by Mars, in this example the Chart would be a Sagittarius Rising, thus Mars would rule their 5th and 12th House (Aries + Scorpio) respectively. While Mars is traditionally more challenging, especially for Day Charts, in this case as ruler of their 5th House of Creation, during a Moon main period, it could also indicate a fertile time of introspection and birth (either literal or figurative), and being proactive in these areas!
