Unlock Success with the Aries New Moon

New Moons are a time of planting fresh seeds and initiating new cycles. A New Moon in Aries is an especially good one for setting and achieving goals with, not least because of this driven, energetic Sign, but because it also comes close to the Astrological New Year!

Whether you want to start a new habit over the course of one lunar cycle (28 days) or a longer-term goal over 6 months until the corresponding Full Moon in Aries during Libra Season, working with the magic of the Moon allows for a deepening of connection to yourself and the cosmos.

What is a New Moon, energetically?

New Moons are when the Sun and Moon visually align in the sky in the same Zodiac Sign, “conjunct“ by exact degree (e.g. both at 4º Aries). It occurs in the Zodiac Season of that Sign (i.e. in this case, 4 days into Aries Season, between the end of March— or whenever the Equinox was— and April).

As this is the first Season of the Astrological Year, it is an extra potent New Moon to set your intentions with! A doubly good time to envision new beginnings.

If a lunation is close to the Nodes (points on the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun, where the Moon’s orbit intersects), they are lined up for an Eclipse! During Eclipse Season the energy can feel unstable, for this reason it is sometimes recommended to lie low and rest, abstaining from magickal work unless experienced.

-> Read more about the North Node in Aries here.

While the Zodiac Seasons occur at roughly the same time each year as the Sun moves about 1º per day, the exact date of the New Moon (or corresponding Full Moon in the opposing Zodiac Sign Season more or less six months later) will vary.

As the Sun and Moon are aligned on a New Moon, it is the start of a cycle— a yin period of introspection and planting of seeds. When there appears to be no Moon in the sky and the night is dark, it is time to turn within for our light.

-> When they square each other, at a 90º angle, roughly a week later, is the time for taking first major action on the intentions we set now!

This part of the lunar cycle would be the equivalent of Winter seasonally. In lunar farming, according to the wonderful Magic of I., gravity from the Moon is stronger now and pulls up water which aids in germination. It would thus be a time of planting plants that produce seeds outside of the fruit.

New Moon in Aries

A New Moon in Aries is the perfect time to plant bold, brave seeds of initiation, leadership, and courage. Don’t be afraid to pioneer! Be the leader you wish to see, and use this energy to overcome any challenges.

Archetypal Aries is the baby of Zodiac, first in line and self-assured in its right to exist— it will let you know what it wants it one way or another! Birth is raw and feral, it requires immense energy and is an initiation. Aries has this zest for life and ability to charge ahead. Act first, think later— this is all about primal instincts!

Mars, the ruler, is the Warrior Planet bringing severance, cutting, burning, anger, and speed, as well as protection, defence, ego, and agency. It can be useful to look to what Mars is currently doing in the sky for more information about each specific Aries Moon.

New Moon in Aries Rituals

New Moon rituals focus on intention-setting for the upcoming cycle (either over the following two weeks until it peaks to fruition in the Full Moon phase; until the next cycle begins again with the following New Moon four weeks later; or until the corresponding Full Moon in the opposing Zodiac Season six months later— in this case, the Full Moon in Aries during Libra Season).

Here is the basis for all my New Moon rituals:

  1. Cleanse your space - You can ring a bell, spray an aura mist (I make a crystal and Reiki-infused Moon water with essential oils); open the windows and smoke cleanse; throw salt in the corners and sweep it out anti-clockwise; or mop with a herbal wash.

  2. Set up an elemental circle - Many rituals may begin by calling in the elements for grounding and protection. I put incense in the East for Air; a candle in the South for Fire; a bowl of water in the West for Water; and crystals in the North for Earth.

  3. Centre + ground yourself - I do some breathwork followed by a rooting visualisation meditation. Simple deep breaths will do.

  4. Journal on your intentions - Write down what you wish to call in using positive affirmations or mantras, you can finish with “so it is” and sign/date it. Often I pull Tarot cards after to see what other messages come up for me (especially powerful now during Pisces Season)!

  5. Plant your seeds - Read your intention out loud three times to call it in, fold the paper three times clockwise and plant it in soil outside or in a plant pot. You can also add seeds, coins, crystals, a key— anything that resonates with your goal.

  6. Water your plant - Thank Mother Nature and the Spirit of Water and Earth for their assistance. Take a moment to visualise your seeds blossoming. Snuff out the candle and let the incense burn down as an offering. Thank the rest of the elements.

  7. BONUS: Burning - Write down what you wish to release of the old Astrological year and safely burn it in a fire. You can also “sain” items by quickly moving them back and forth through a flame to purify them.

When you create your New Moon ritual, apart from the basics listed above, tailored to the corresponding Zodiac Sign and your own preferences— you can also align it with the place in your Natal Chart it’s occurring, i.e. the House it’s falling in. Read on for how:
